Guidelines for Blood Donation

During Blood Donation:

  • Breathe normally and keep squeezing the stress ball at regular intervals.
  • Stay relaxed and stress-free. You may chew gum or listen to music if you like.
  • Avoid looking at the blood bag—focus instead on the posters or remember that in just 5 minutes, one bag of blood can save up to three lives.
  • If you feel any discomfort or unusual symptoms, immediately inform the medical staff for assistance.

After Blood Donation:

  • Press the puncture site with sterile gauze for at least 10 minutes and keep your arm raised across your chest.
  • Do not stand up immediately after donation to avoid dizziness, blackout or fainting.
  • Take rest in the same position for about 10 minutes.
  • Drink at least 500 ml of water and have biscuits, snacks or fluids before leaving the donation area.
  • Drink an extra 4 glasses of water throughout the day and avoid heavy physical activities.
  • Refrain from driving, operating heavy machinery or doing high-altitude tasks on the same day.
  • Remove the bandage after 5 hours.
  • If swelling, pain or bruising occurs at the donation site, apply ice and consult a physician.

Permanent Deferral from Blood Donation:

Individuals with the following conditions should not donate blood:

  • HIV/AIDS, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B or C (or history of these infections).
  • Thalassemia, Hemophilia or Cancer patients.
  • Those who have undergone organ, tissue or bone marrow transplantation.
  • Patients with chronic kidney disease, uncontrolled hypertension, insulin-dependent diabetes, persistent fever/diarrhea/cough, unexplained weight loss, thyroid disease, tuberculosis, heart disease, lung disease, bleeding disorders or other significant blood-related conditions.
  • If blood donation is very necessary, these patients need consultation from the transfusion medicine department before donation.
Why Voluntary Blood Donation Matters
  • There is no substitute for human blood.
  • • Many critical patients struggle to find suitable donors in emergencies. If just 2% of the population donates blood once a year, Bangladesh’s blood shortage could be resolved.
  • • Regular blood donation (every 4 months by healthy individuals) has no harmful effect. In fact, it provides both physical and mental health benefits, as the body naturally regenerates blood cells.
“Blood Donation is a Journey of Humanity — Donate Voluntarily, Save Lives.”
